According to AYURVEDA

Precautions

If a person is in poor state of digestion, he / she should avoid excessive use of hot, salty food, sour foods, intake of rough (dry in nature). The pregnant and lactating women should not take this herbal supplement.

Pippali (Piper Longum)

Pipali (Piper Longum) is a perennial root with jointed branches, swollen nodes. The leaves are entire, glabrous. Upper leaves are small and oblong-ovate in shape and lower leaves are ovate-cordate. The spikes bear the creamy coloured flowers. The fruit is about 4 cm in length. First, the fruit is green in colour, changes to orange red when ripe and upon drying becomes black.Pipali grows wild in hot and evergreen regions and Southeast Asia.

Constituents of Pipali according to (Williams on 2002 Yoganarsinhar 2000), and their properties:-

  • Volatile oil comprising of caryophyllene, Pentadecane, Besaboline, thujine, terpinoline, Zingiberina that lend aromatic characteristic to Pipali.
  • The alkaloids like piperine, methylpiperine, pipernonaline, asarinine make pipali pungent in characteristic according to study conducted.
  • Other constituents of Pipali include lignans, sesamin, pulviatilol, esters, fatty acids certain amino acids, minerals such as calcium, phosphorous and iron.

Ayurveda and Pippali (Piper Longum)

In Ayurveda , Pippali [Piper Longum] is said to be a rejuvenator. It helps to stimulate the hunger and expels the air from the intestine. In Ayurvedic texts, pippali (piper longum) is regarded as one of the most powerful Rasayana herbs which means it boosts longevity . Ayurveda considers pipali (piper longum) as the herb possessing digestive, assimilating and metabolic properties. Fresh pippali alleviates pitta (fire) but aggravates vatta (Air) and Kapha (Dry) doshas. Dry Pippali (piper Longum) on the other hand, alleviates vatta (air) but aggravates Pitta (Fire) doshas.

Uses
According to Ayurveda, it is regarded as the best herb:

  • for spleen disorders.
  • as a stimulant for digestive and respiratory system.
  • helps in cold, congestion and ama -undigested particles.
  • is regarded as brain tonic.

Pippali (Piper Longum) and other ingredients:-

  • with honey it combats hyperacidity.
  • Extract of pipali helps in acidity.
  • Pipali with Amalika [Amla] may cure anaemia.
  • With honey and ghee, it reduces the frequency of paroxysms in bronchial asthama.
  • With honey controls hiccups.

Note:
In Ancient Scriptures, Pippali (Piper Longum) is highly praised as vardhamana pippali where the dosage of Pippali is increased gradually.

What is Vardhamana Pippali:-

First day: 3 fruits of pippali + Milk [4 part] + Water [1 part]. i.e. 3: 4 : 1
Then Successive 10 days dose is increased by 1 pippali fruit everyday.

After 10 days, the dose is reduced by 1 pipali fruit daily. According to ancient scriptures this Vardhamana Pippali is useful in chronic respiratory ailments , anemia, recurrent fever, piles and digestive problems. It strengthens the immunity of body. During this process only lukewarm milk is recommended .

Guggulu (Commiphora Mukul)

Guggulu (Comiphora Mukul) produces a resinous sap called as gum guggul. In Ayurveda and Traditional Hindu formulations the extract of gum guggul called as guggulipid has been used for nearly 3000 years in India. The ingredient present in this extract works as a defence agent . Guggul contains phytosterols , organic acids , diterpenes , lignans , sterols, esters, and fatty acid alcohols.

Properties of Guggulu (Comiphora Mukul) : -

According to ayurveda Guggulu (comiphora mukul) is alterative (that has the power to restore the boily functions gradually ) , antiatherogenic (stops the formation of fatty cells) , antihypercholesterolemic(which acts as a defence for high cholesterol formation), anti-inflammatory (stops swelling , pain and redness ) , antipyretic (that can prevent fever ) , antiseptic (that can decontaminate ) , antispasmodic(that can help in spasms ), astringent , bitter , demulcent (smoothening agent for irritated mucous membrane) , disinfectant (that inhibits the growth of harmful organisms ) , diuretic(that helps in urination) , enhances phagocytosis , immunostimulant as it increases leukocytes , expectorant (that can take he phlegm out ), stomachic (stimulant of digestion / appetite ) .

How Guggul (COMIPHORA MUKUL) helps:-

According to the study, Z-guggulsterone and E-guggulsterone present in GUGGULU helps to reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Guggulipid lowers VLDL and LDL cholesterol and triglycerides and at the same time raise HDL cholesterol . Guggulu stimulates thyroid thereby increasing body’s metabolic rate. Also guggulu stimulates liver to metabolize LDL cholesterol thereby lowering the cholesterol in the bloodstream . In this manner guggulu acts on liver and thyroid and protects against Atherosclerosis .

  • Guggulu (comiphora mukul) lowers LDL (Low Density Lipid) , increases HDL(High Density Lipid).
  • Guggulu (comiphora mukul) does not allow the platelets to coagulate and breaks up the blood clots if any , thus prevents heart stroke .
  • Guggulu (comiphora mukul) is also helpful in losing weight .
  • Guggulu (comiphora mukul) increases the activity of white blood cells and increases immunity of the body.

Precautions:
Guggulu is regarded as EMENOGOGUE (promoter of menstrual discharge ) , and stimulant for urine . Therefore should not be taken during Pregnancy.
